La Lajita, Fuerteventura: beach, kayak and snorkeling

3 min read

Between Costa Calma and Morro Jable, the FV-2 road runs straight through a small village most visitors only know from the zoo sign on the roadside. La Lajita is far more than the gateway to a park: it's also the launch point for one of the nicest kayak routes in southern Fuerteventura, past cliffs you can only reach by paddling there.

Where La Lajita is

La Lajita belongs to the municipality of Pájara, on the southwest coast of the island, roughly halfway between the resort buzz of Costa Calma and Morro Jable. It's a quiet village without the hotel density of its neighbours, living mostly off the park that made it famous and a rocky, little-visited stretch of coast that starts right where the village ends.

Most drivers on the FV-2 heading south only stop for the park and carry on, but the village itself is worth a few minutes: quiet streets, sea views from the promenade and a pace quite different from the resorts around it. It also makes a decent base if you'd rather get around the island without staying in the middle of a busy tourist strip.

Kayaking and snorkeling past the cliffs

Kayaks on La Lajita beach before paddling out, Fuerteventura

The kayak and snorkeling trip from La Lajita sets off straight from the village beach. After a short safety briefing and gear handout (with a wetsuit available on request), you paddle along a stretch of Atlantic coastline lined with cliffs you can only really see from the water. Halfway through there's a roughly 30-minute stop to snorkel in a spot with plenty of marine life, the same one local dive schools use for their students. It runs 2 hours for €45 per adult, with a guide, snorkel kit and pick-up included from Tarajalejo, Costa Calma, Esquinzo and Morro Jable.

Oasis Wildlife, right at the village entrance

Right at the entrance to La Lajita, just off the FV-2, sits Oasis Wildlife, home to over 3,000 animals from 250 species and the island's only botanical garden. It opens from 10:00 to 17:00, is wheelchair accessible, and lets you add on an optional camel ride or lemur encounter. Travelling with kids, the natural plan is a morning at the park and an afternoon left free for the beach and the kayak trip.

More to do in La Lajita

  1. Walk around the village: small and free of tourist traffic, it takes about twenty minutes and has a couple of local bars right on the main road.
  2. Head to Tarajalejo: the neighbouring village, five minutes away by car, has a dark-sand beach and is a well-known spot among the island's surfers.
  3. Book the kayak trip early in the day: the sea tends to be calmer in the morning, which means better visibility for the snorkeling stop.
  4. You don't need to be a strong swimmer: a life jacket is compulsory throughout the route and the guide sets the pace for the group.
