Caleta de Fuste, Fuerteventura: beach and activities

3 min read

On Fuerteventura's east coast, ten minutes from the airport, a sheltered bay with calm, shallow water holds most of the watersports on offer in the municipality of Antigua. Caleta de Fuste doesn't have Corralejo's buzz or Jandía's dunes going for it: its strength is a quiet family beach and a marina with three very different trips leaving from it, from riding your own jet ski to crossing the island by buggy.

What Caleta de Fuste actually is

Caleta de Fuste started out as a small fishing harbour and grew into a resort in the 1980s, within the municipality of Antigua on the island's east coast. The row of terracotta hotels along the shore is the area's most recognisable feature, and below them sits a semi-enclosed bay of golden sand with almost no swell: the go-to family beach in southern Fuerteventura, with lifeguards on duty and water shallow enough to wade into without a second thought.

At one end of the beach stands the Castillo de Caleta de Fuste, a small 18th-century watchtower the resort takes its name from, and at the other end lies the marina, where most of the island's boat trips set off from.

Jet ski from the marina

Caleta de Fuste's own marina is also where the jet ski ride sets off: a closed, supervised circuit where you take the controls yourself, solo or with someone else, no previous experience needed, just be of legal age and bring your ID. The session lasts 20 minutes and costs €60, whether you ride alone or with a passenger, so it pays off to go as a pair or with family.

A catamaran to Pozo Negro

Catamaran anchored off the beach of Caleta de Fuste, Fuerteventura

For a slower-paced plan, the catamaran from Caleta de Fuste leaves from the same marina bound for the fishing village of Pozo Negro, with a stop to swim and snorkel in the bay. A mixed paella is served on board with wrinkled potatoes and mojo sauce, plus beer, soft drinks and water throughout the crossing. It runs 4 hours for €59 per adult and €35 per child.

A buggy ride into the island's interior

If you'd rather leave the beach behind and see the rest of the island, the pick-up point for the Fuerteventura buggy tour is close by, collecting from Caleta de Fuste and Costa de Antigua and heading inland: volcanic tracks, a small goat-cheese farm with a free tasting, and a stop next to the airport to watch planes take off before heading back to the coast. It runs 3 hours and costs €90 for a solo buggy and €115 for a double (two seats).

More to do in Caleta de Fuste

  1. Walk the seafront promenade: it links the castle with the marina in a short stretch, lined with restaurants and sea-view terraces the whole way.
  2. Snorkel by the castle: the rocky patch in front of the watchtower holds enough marine life that you don't need a boat for it.
  3. Stop by the marina: yachts and catamarans moored side by side, and the best view of the whole bay from the breakwater.
  4. Pair it with Antigua: the village the municipality takes its name from, with its restored windmill, is a ten-minute drive inland.
