Arona Show Tenerife: Canarian music in Los Cristianos

4 min read

Search for things to do at night in southern Tenerife and you know what comes up: dinner shows, tribute acts and not much else. From 7 October there is something else. Arona is a stage show built on Canarian roots music, performed every Wednesday at the Auditorio Infanta Leonor in Los Cristianos, and there is nothing else like it in the resorts.

One thing before you go looking for it: Arona is also the name of the municipality that contains Los Cristianos and Playa de las Américas. This page is about the show.

What the Arona show actually is

It is the work of Compañía Pieles, a Canarian company that has spent more than ten years researching the folklore of the islands and has performed over 300 times on and off the archipelago, including several residencies at the Jameos del Agua in Lanzarote.

The idea behind it lands the moment the curtain goes up: ordinary objects make the music. An oar, a barrel, a farming tool, a piece of fishing gear. Twelve performers on stage turn the everyday kit of the hillside farms and the fishing families into instruments, and use them to raise the work songs, the oral memory and the legends of the islands.

"Arona is a serious attempt to give the visitor a carefully made heritage experience," says Jonatán Rodríguez, director of Compañía Pieles. This is not a postcard reenactment for tourists. It is folklore reread through contemporary staging, with a large scale production behind it.

If you want a feel for the tone before booking, this is the teaser the company has released.

Why it works even if you speak no Spanish

This is the part that matters if you are on holiday. There is no spoken text. It is all music, percussion and singing, so a German, Italian or British visitor follows it exactly as a local does. Nothing to read, no jokes lost in translation.

The show runs 75 minutes with no interval. It is recommended from age 6, though anyone can enjoy it.

The Auditorio Infanta Leonor, in Los Cristianos

The staging was designed for this specific venue, which seats 700 and sits in Los Cristianos, minutes from the southern hotel areas. The hall is accessible and there is a row reserved for wheelchairs.

The address is Avenida Juan Carlos I, 20B, 38650 Los Cristianos, right beside the Centro Cultural and a short walk from the seafront promenade. It is a few minutes by car from Playa de las Américas or Costa Adeje. The venue's phone number is 922 757 006 if you need to ask the box office anything.

One practical detail worth knowing before you go: seats are not numbered. They are taken on a first come, first served basis, so if you want to sit centrally it pays to be at the door when it opens at 7.30pm.

Tips for the night

  1. Arrive around 7.30pm, when doors open. Seats are unnumbered and the central rows go first.
  2. Wednesday is the only performance day, so build the rest of your week around it.
  3. Eat afterwards. It finishes around 9.45pm, a good hour to walk down to Los Cristianos harbour.
  4. It works with children from about 6: the rhythm, the percussion and the objects that make sounds you do not expect are exactly what holds them.
